About 8 diapers

I’ve found this number is perfect. On average (depending on how long you’re out of the house) you’ll likely use 2-3 diapers. 4 is great to have for accidents such as a blowout or spill. The rest of the diapers are for extra measure for the days you forget to pack more diapers and just grab the bag and go.

The worst feeling is being gone and realizing that you forgot to pack more diapers. 8 is almost perfect because it’s just enough but not taking up too much space.

2 extra outfits

I recommend grabbing two extra outfits whenever you’re leaving the house. It’s the same concept with diapers. Accidents happen with babies so have a backup for the backup. This will save you on those days when everything goes wrong!

Bottle

Your baby will get hungry/thirsty. From 0-6 months be prepared to have a bottle of milk ready for them. From 6-12 I often times brought a bottle of water for when my baby was thirsty.

Nursing cover

If you are breastfeeding and you’re shy like I was, I recommend getting a good nursing cover that will stay on while the baby eats. After about 6-8 months your baby will get used to going longer stretches without nursing so it is not as essential down the line. I also ended up getting better with nursing and being more confident using my shirt to cover when needed.

Here are some nursing covers I recommend:

Teething toys/supplies

From 4-6 months or even earlier your baby will start teething. Teething is very uncomfortable for poor babies so it’s great to have some options to help soothe teething. Here are my favorite teething products that my son loved.

Toys

One of the biggest diaper bag must-haves is toys. After about 4 months toys are good to have to keep your baby entertained and happy. The happy number with toys is 3-4 small toys that your baby enjoys. Here are some of my son’s favorite diaper bag-friendly toys.

Snacks

For babies ages 6-12 months, it’s important to always carry around some snacks. Snacks can make a mess in your bag if you’re filling it too full (like you’ll likely need to) so I recommend a mess-free snack holder.

Blanket

A light blanket is always nice to have. Sometimes your little one will want a nap in your arms or they’ll just simply get cold.

Pacifier

My son was never a fan of pacifiers, but I can see this being very important for babies who love them. Make sure you have an extra pacifier in your diaper bag just in case!

Sunscreen

Your baby’s skin is very sensitive. I recommend always having spf 100 sunscreen on you at all times. Keep one in the car, house, and in your diaper bag!
