Sock Bun Curls

So, as usual, something on Pinterest piqued my interest. The best part, it involves doing something with my hair. You know, my normally unwashed, un-styled, braided and bondi-banded hair.

The best part of my newly discovered ‘Sock Bun Curls’ is that it involves minimal effort and no heat.

Here are my photo instructions, but this video does a much better job explaining.

First, put your hair in a very very high pony. Helpful tip, don’t make the pony too tight or you’ll get a headache. This is what happened to me the first time I tried so I gave up on them and took it out before my head exploded.

Next, dampen hair in the pony. I’m not sure what the proper amount is but I went for slightly drier than say towel dried hair. Then, take a dress sock with the toe area cut off. Roll it up, then place it at the base of the pony and unroll it to cover the entire pony.

Then roll the sock back down to the base of the pony, rolling your hair into the sock until it looks something like this… (ignore the makeupless bagsundermyeyes face)

Then, you do nothing. Sleep on it. Blog about it. Hope that it comes out cute so that you didn’t just waste your time starting this blog post.

…The next morning…

Wake up excited for your hair to supposedly look like this…

Feel flummoxed when it looks like this…

OK, so it didn’t work. However, I’m not giving up… yet. My hair was still a little damp when I took it out so I think it was too damp to start with. I shall try again! But in the famous words by Tim Gunn, “Make it work!”

Will you try sock bun curls so you can tell me if it worked for you? Please?

I have wanted to but I dont think my hair is long enough. So i sent it to another friend with super long hair and she tried it and didnt have much success with it yet either. I will keep you posted if she figures out the “trick”

Maybe it depends on the type of sock you use? Cotton vs. poly?

I’m going to try it with a cotton sock. My husband is about to be missing one….

I’m using this method but instead of unrolling the sock, I leave it in the shape of a donut and roll my hair around it as I advance to my scalp. I have thick shoulder length hair that is very textured, wavy at the nape and straight everywhere else :( it worked out wonderfully, because my hair is so thick and I was afraid it woulnt take I cheated a little and blasted it with the blow drier before I removed it.

So I found this just last night so I took a shower and tried it after letting my hair air dry for a bit.. But it came out all wrong.. Most people I saw have straight completely dry hair and just use a bit of spray bottle water.. I have thick frizzy hair and it was all bad when I woke up.
So I put my hair in a bun and went off to school.. I’ll try again soon

Ok so I tried this, with dry hair and some product in it, think mousse then blow dry. Did the high pony tail and I left the “doughnut” in tact and wraped my hair kind of around it? You couldn’t see the sock when I was done. Slept on it for only 5 hours and when I woke up I had beautiful curls on the top half but it was a little flat underneath, thinking I may need to put the pony a little lower and use a smaller sock.. I used a tube sock and maybe a smaller sock will give tighter curls? Just some tips to try! GL! :)

Mine worked—I loved my curls…I damped my hair…but not a lot…I rolled the sock then rolled it into my hair…make sense?

I saw my cousin, who has very unruly, unmanageable hair try this last night. She posted pix on facebook this morning and looked so great, my hubby now has one less sock. I will try it our and let you know how it worked. My hair is short, so I am using an ankle sock and hopefully my hair that doesnt like to hold a curl… or wave, for that matter… will be brilliant and beautiful in the morning. wish me luck!

the curls came out beatuful on my rmate

I tried it for the first time last night. My hair was completely dry when I put it in a ponytail. I took a comb, ran it under the water and combed the ponytail (did this a few times). So, it was completely dry when I took it down. It worked beautifully on me. That was so easy, sure beats using the curling iron and hot rollers!
